This is a loon, the Minnesota state bird. The picture on top was taken by my Aunt Amy, and the picture on the bottom was from http://www.netstate.com/states/symb/ birds/mn_common_loon.htm. Loons are looked upon as a rarity among my siblings and cousins, although sightings of them really aren't. But they are beautiful birds, with an eery call.
